President Trump extended a federal hiring freeze through October 15, 2025, prohibiting the filling of vacant civilian positions or creating new ones, with exceptions for the military, immigration enforcement, national security, and public safety. The Department of Veterans Affairs has reduced its workforce by 17,000 since January 2025 and plans to cut another 12,000 through attrition by September 30, 2025. The freeze aims to lock in savings from layoffs and deferred retirements, while agencies are encouraged to use existing personnel efficiently. VA Secretary Doug Collins stated that a department-wide workforce reduction is not planned, but efficiency improvements will continue. The Office of Personnel Management director can grant exceptions as needed.

Following the Secretary of Defense’s hiring freeze issued on 28 February 2025, all Department of the Air Force (DAF) civilian hiring actions—whether to fill existing vacancies or create new positions—were paused unless approved directly by the Secretary of Defense. On 16 June 2025, the Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) released supplemental guidance to the hiring freeze, introducing greater hiring flexibility for current employees across AFMC and AFSC. In response, the AFSC/A1 Directorate of Personnel developed a dedicated internal job board that enables current AFSC civilian employees to view and apply for open positions within AFSC organizations. Please note: Access to the AFSC Job Board requires a valid Common Access Card (CAC). These opportunities are strictly internal—external candidates are not eligible to apply through this platform.
