President Donald Trump's administration has removed acting Inspector General Joe Allen at the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), the latest in a series of moves targeting independent watchdogs. Allen was ousted after sharing information with prosecutors investigating New York Attorney General Letitia James for mortgage fraud and planning to inform Congress of FHFA's non-cooperation with investigators. FHFA Director Bill Pulte has issued criminal referrals against Trump's opponents, including James, Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, and Sen. Adam Schiff.
This follows similar replacements at the Education, Commerce, Housing and Urban Development, and Justice departments. Trump fired 17 IGs at the start of his second term, plus others at USAID and the Export-Import Bank, while the Office of Management and Budget has blocked funding for a federal IG support entity.
Critics, including former Interior IG Mark Lee Greenblatt and Project on Government Oversight's Faith Williams, argue these actions undermine oversight independence, weakening efforts to detect waste, fraud, and corruption. The president can replace acting IGs but must select from current IG office staff; it's unclear if Allen will return to his prior role as FHFA IG chief counsel.
